Sylvia Carewe was born in New York City to Russian immigrant parents. One of the most common subjects in her semiabstract paintings was New York City at night. Her works are in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Modern Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum, and she received several awards from the French Government.
